Adam Schwartz, Carol Gersmehl

The Academy of Urban Planning held its Second Community Geography Night on Thursday, November 19th, in celebration of Geography Awareness Week. Activities ranged from a teacher professional development on Mapping Tools (Arc Explorer 900, and Oasis 2.0), to an student led fled assembly of the European floor map. Event coordinator Adam Schwartz displayed had some help from students in reassembling his Up From Flames exhbition, first shown at the Brooklyn Historical Society in 2007.

The performance this year was very exciting, attended by 43 students and community members. Drumming was provided by AUP Freshmen, led by our local teacher Bless. Academic presentations were presented by AP Human Geography students. Our guest of honor this year was Nadine Whitted, district manager of Brooklyn Community Board 4.

It was a great event, and we look forward to celebrating geography again in GAW 2010!

This report came from Carol Gersmehl, Co-Coordinator of the NYGA and the Staff Geographer at the Renaissance Charter School in Jackson Heights.
Renaissance Charter School (a K-12 public school in Queens) celebrated Geography Awareness Week on Nov. 19, 2009.  High school students taught classes at every grade level K through 12 about geography themes in relation to their study of New Orleans (e.g., hurricanes, racism, cultures who came together).
During the high school assembly, New York State Assemblyman Jose R. Peralta (39th Assembly District in Queens) presented a citation through his chief of staff congratulating Renaissance Charter School on its focus on geography.

Note from editor: If you did an activity during Geography Awareness Week, let us know about it. Send us pictures and a short write-up and we'll post your event on this website. After all, if we don't promote geography, who will?
