Geography is Important to ME!
The New York Geographic Alliance is working with National Geographic Society and other state alliances across the USA to promote a bill in Congress called "Teaching Geography is Fundamental"). We need to convince our representatives in the House and the Senate that geography is an important core subject for all students from Kindergarden to university. We need your help! If you are a classroom teacher and teaching geographic concepts (whether stand-alone or integrated with other disciplines) we want to hear from you.
How do you use geography in your classroom? Be creative! If you are reading a story in second grade about a girl growing up in Japan, you are teaching geography! If you are an earth science teacher talking about the Pacific Ring of Fire, you are doing geography! If you are teaching Italian cuisine in your Home and Careers class, you are doing geography! What is so great about geography is its interdisplinary nature.
You can help us by completing the attached form below. We will respond with a “Geography Matters in New York Teacher Award” certificate and a letter to your supervisor announcing your award (optional). If geography matters in your classroom, please allow us the opportunity to recognize your efforts and to say thank you. You can send the form in by ground mail or attach it to an email to Timothy McDonnell.
